Fort Lauderdale’s Water District, International Hall of Fame, New Era!
Fort Lauderdale’s Water District, International Hall of Fame, new era!
The Water District is bringing an array of show-stopping features to the Fort Lauderdale coast: a ground-level Marine Aquarium anchored by a spectacular 10,000-gallon tank, which will offer highly interactive, adaptable educational screens perfect for school field trips and international travelers alike.
The Reimagined ISHOF Museum: Stepping out of the aquarium, visitors will ascend to a 24,000-square-foot, high-tech museum dedicated to celebrating the history of swimming, legendary athletes, and civil rights milestones in aquatic sports. The "High Line"-Inspired Promenade: A beautifully elevated, pedestrian-friendly walkway will cut across the campus, seamlessly linking the beach, the complex's East and West buildings, and a brand-new public dock accessible by the Fort Lauderdale Water Taxi.
Frameless® Immersive Art: In a massive cultural win for the neighborhood, the district will house Frameless®, a groundbreaking digital art exhibition. Masterpieces by Monet, Van Gogh, and Dalí will be projected across walls, ceilings, and floors in a vibrant symphony of color and sound.
Rooftop Dining by Apogee Lauderdale: Crowning the structure will be a luxury rooftop restaurant and premier event space boasting unrivaled, 360-degree panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway.
Preserving Aquatic Royalty: While the surrounding campus is getting a sleek, cantilevered makeover, the heart of the original facility remains intact. The iconic 27-meter (9-story) dive tower—the highest competitive diving board in the Western Hemisphere—will continue to stand tall as a beacon for miles. The adjacent Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center, which recently completed its own award-winning pool renovations, will see immediate Phase 1 upgrades by mid-2026. This includes critical improvements like a brand-new Ocean Rescue Headquarters, reinforced seawalls, and vital shade structures over the grandstands to keep cheering families cool during high-stakes meets.
As noted by Swimming World Magazine, the facility regularly hosts premier events where local youth club swimmers get the rare, inspiring opportunity to train in the same lanes as Olympic champions like Katie Ledecky and Simone Manuel.
A Tidal Wave of Economic & Beach Impact. The ripple effects of The Water District on the central beach area will be massive. Sitting directly adjacent to the ongoing $3 billion Bahia Mar marina and luxury condo redevelopment, this corner of Fort Lauderdale is rapidly shifting into an ultra-premium, pedestrian-friendly hub. Best of all for residents? The project is structured as a 30-year public-private partnership, meaning it delivers over $53 million in infrastructure upgrades at zero upfront cost to city taxpayers.
"It's finally happening," Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis shared during the groundbreaking ceremony. "These areas were neglected for many, many years... and we're going to see a lot of public opportunities there." Once fully completed, the new International Swimming Hall of Fame campus is expected to pump an estimated $70 million annually into the local economy, fueling nearby restaurants, hotels, and retail shops.
When Can You Visit? The transformation is rolling out in rapid, carefully planned phases. Phase One—including the state-of-the-art Ocean Rescue HQ and waterfront perimeter seawalls—is on track to finish by the end of June 2026. From there, construction on the dazzling six-story West Building kicks off over the summer. Keep your eyes on the horizon: the grand opening of The Water District is officially slated for late 2028. For the latest construction milestones and design reveals direct from the developers, check out the official updates on the International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF) portal. The reputable Arquitectonica will design the new project. Get ready, South Florida—the beach is about to welcome a brand-new crown jewel!
